Other Health Impairment (OHI)

What It Means:

Other Health Impairment (OHI) is a category for students who have a medical condition that makes it harder for them to focus, keep up with schoolwork, or attend school regularly. It’s one of the most flexible categories and includes conditions like ADHD, epilepsy, diabetes, and more.

How It Might Look in Children:

- Has trouble sitting still or paying attention (often with ADHD)

- Misses school often due to health issues

- Seems tired, low-energy, or overwhelmed

- Struggles with organizing tasks or following directions

- Shows frustration or behavior challenges related to their health

Common conditions under OHI include:

- ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

- Asthma

- Epilepsy or seizure disorders

- Heart conditions

- Diabetes

- Chronic illness

How the School Can Help:

- Extra breaks or rest periods during the day

- Behavior support and check-ins

- Adjusted workload or extra time for tasks

- Medication plans or health support during school

- Clear routines and reminders to help stay focused

How I Can Support You:

- Help with IEP or 504 plans related to health conditions

- Emotional support and self-regulation tools for your child

- Parent coaching for behavior and routines at home

- Collaboration with doctors, school nurses, and teachers

- Making sure your child feels seen, supported, and understood

Health challenges may affect learning, but they do not define your child’s potential.
With the right support, they can thrive.
